The Sun Storage 7000 Systems are unified storage systems that deliver enterprise-class data services, file and block level support, scalability, and performance.

The Sun Storage 7000's Hybrid Storage Pool significantly improves I/O performance when compared to mechanical disk drives. This is achieved by combining DRAM, SSDs, and HDDs to deliver improved performance and increased capacity, whilst reducing power consumption.

Solaris ZFS (Zettabyte File System) seamlessly integrates SSDs and HDDs and optimises access to different media types. The file system transparently manages data placement, directing frequently-used data to fast SSDs and less-frequently used data to slower, less expensive HDDs.

Sun Open Storage combines open-source software with industry-standard system components to significantly reduce storage costs. In an open architecture, customers can select the most suitable hardware and software components to meet their requirements.

Sun provide industry-standard hardware and open source storage software via OpenSolaris™. Unlike proprietary systems customers are not locked into buying disk drives, controllers, and proprietary software features from a single vendor,

at high prices. They can add their own drives or software to improve functionality or reduce the cost of the system.

Sun has released a significant volume of storage software to many communities through open-source licensing, in order to enrich their code bases. This facilitates higher performance and flexibility for a wide range of storage devices. These and the many other features in OpenSolaris technology enable end users, OEMs, and developers to build innovative & inexpensive storage systems with very little software development.
